Even if you’ve got great Spanish, there’s still a whole load of vocab that doesn’t get taught in the classroom and can complete throw you in the real world. So if there’s a friendly face with a few choice words of English to calm you in your moment utter linguistic brain freeze, then more’s the better. Below are some services and places where English is spoken. I don’t have first hand experience of them all, but they have been recommended by other English speakers in the city.

It can be tough making that change to live away from your roots, so sometimes a bit of psychological support is needed.

Hair
A decent level of communication is most definitely vital when getting your barnet cut. There’s only so much you can do with a crumbled magazine picture with Jennifer Aniston (or whoever is the ‘now’ cut of the moment) or the art of wild gesticulation. So a smattering of English is vital to make sure that if it’s a trim you’re after, you don’t come out looking like Sinead O’Connor.
Gloss
The one man hair emporium that is Gloss, is tiny but Manolo caters to all needs, genders and tastes. And he’s really reasonably priced too. Plus he was my first ever blog post!

Obando
Andaluza Angela, the owner of Obando, lived in Edinburgh for nine years, where she worked in hair salons. On coming back to Seville, she opened this cute little hairdressers close to calle Feria. The hair products used are organic and they’ve got a modern edge. I’ve been once and felt in safe hands.
Tattoo Studio
Sixextesia
Uruguayan Sebastian at Sinextesia has lived in the US and even though I haven’t personally had one of his creations, he comes recommended.

Accountant - well sort of
Back in the day when I was self employed in the UK I had an accountant, but it seems in Spain, it’s a ‘Gestor’ you’re in need of. I’ve just found myself self employed once again, but this time battling what is the confusing, illogical world of the social security office and hacienda. So luckily I came across Carlos Cuberos who can not only handle my accounts, but also help me translate some of the technical stuff into English.

Accommodation
A website that has launched recently in Seville as a multi-media platform to smooth the process of finding accommodation in the city is Spot A Home. Aimed at foreign students or people working away from home who need to find somewhere to live before they arrive, the service personally vets rooms in homes across the city, outlining in fine detail the pros and cons of each apartment or house. You even get to see a rough and ready video of each apartment, however you don’t get to check out the property yourself in person before you book it. Prices look pretty reasonable, and seem to be somewhere between 200 - 350 Euros per room, depending on location and whether a single or double.

I was looking for an English speaking doctor but your page did not seem to have this info!! I am staying in Seville for 3 months to try and learn Spanish but for medical things it is a bit difficult. I would also be interested in finding someone to have Spanish conversations with if you knew of anybody who would like to improve their English while I improve my Spanish. I also have a passion for horses and have ridden all my life and would also like to find a yoga class but not in English!! Any suggestions you have would be great. Kind regards Fiona
Hi Fiona, I’m afraid I don’t know of any English speaking doctor. You’ll just have to take pot luck at your local health centre. Yoga wise most of the centres I mention in my yoga guide offer classes in Spanish, unless I specifically say the classes are in English. https://iknowalittleplaceinseville.com/my-little-guide-to-yoga-in-seville-2016/ Hope that helps. Do you know of any English speaking mechanics? Thanks
Hi Mandy, probably a bit late for you now, but I don’t know any I’m afraid. Hope you got your self sorted.
